SOFTISAN® 378 – The „Melt-on-Touch“ Emollient

Everyday life, whether in business or private settings, puts many demands on us, and we place high demands on ourselves to meet these expectations. It is important to take a little break now and then, just for yourself. This me-time should be used to free yourself from internal and external pressure and to do something good for yourself. Taking care of your skin, the body’s largest organ and the mirror of the soul, is essential.

The team of the IOI Oleo GmbH Personal Care Business Unit has created a product that will melt you away. SOFTISAN® 378 is a pasty emollient with a melting point of around 39° C. When applied to the skin, it melts gently and feels smooth and powdery, leaving the skin feeling rich, oily and yet velvety.

The pasty form of SOFTISAN® 378 gives end products more suppleness and richness. As a body butter, for example, it has properties comparable to those of the beloved “Shea Butter“. In this context, we challenged SOFTISAN® 378 and heated it to 100° C for 26 hours in order to accelerate possible oxidation. The result showed that the properties had not changed, and the product remained stable. The colour, consistency and smell did not change either.

Properties of SOFTISAN® 378 at a glance:

  • From saturated fatty acids with a length of C8 – C18
  • Extraordinary stable against oxidation
  • Low to medium polarity
  • Wide pH value range (4 – 7), so nothing prevents the use of acids, self-tanners or thickeners
  • Compatible with alcohol, pigments, UV filters, preservatives and other oils
  • Can be added to the oil phase
  • 100% natural (NOI 1.0, according to ISO 16128), vegan, halal, kosher and ECOCERT, NaTrue, RSPO MB certified
  • Readily biodegradable, non-toxic to marine life
The product is inert and therefore does not react with any other chemicals. The use of saturated fatty acids slows down unwanted chemical processes. SOFTISAN® 378 is made from pure individual substances and corresponds to the monograph of the Ph.Eur. and USP-NF for “Hard Fat”. As a result, the product is often used in pharmacy (see this article).

SOFTISAN® 378 is widely utilised in the personal care industry and can be added to lip care as well as in body care, skin care, hair care or baby care products. The following formulations show the many possible uses and embody the motto  “Melt-on-Touch”:
