The CPHI is THE highlight of the year for pharmaceutical raw materials. Of course, we will also be on site in Milan from 6 to 8 October as exhibitors with our IOI Oleo team. Our experts are looking forward to interesting novelties, exciting events and especially the exchange with our visitors.
This year, our focus will be on a particular question: What if lipid-based excipients could perform even better than so far? Let’s think about that together!
The limits of lipid-based excipients
Lipid-based excipients have proved their worth for the controlled release of active ingredients; however, they do pose certain challenges, depending on composition and application. In the case of lipid matrices, structural changes can affect the release profile during storage. In addition, their hydrophobic properties often impede wetting and the controlled release of hydrophilic active ingredients. Surfactants or specialised manufacturing processes are therefore often needed in order to fine tune these properties or combine hydrophilic and lipophilic active ingredients in a formulation.
So, we ask ourselves: What would you do with a lipid-based excipient that …
- maintains its intended release profile throughout the entire shelf life?
- combines hydrophilic and lipophilic active ingredients with each other without surfactants?
- offers both wettability and a lipid-based active ingredient release in a single excipient?
LipoGalen® as a possible answer to our questions
At IOI Oleo, we want to rethink the development of lipid-based excipients within the LipoGalen® family and particularly the most recently launched LipoGalen® 144. In contrast to classical hard fats, LipoGalen® 144 shows no polymorphism or fat bloom formation and can absorb and co-formulate without the addition of surfactants. It was originally developed as a suppository mass of the next generation; currently, we are discovering additional applications in topical preparations.
What comes next for the LipoGalen® family?
A series of further product launches is expected within the LipoGalen® family in the coming years. The focus in all development candidates is on stability in the solid state and modulatable wettability. In case studies and cooperation projects, we examine the resulting possible areas of application. Among others, uses as a solubilizer, a lubricant in tablets, a carrier system for active ingredients or as a functional coating for taste-masking purposes are conceivable.
The focus is on technologies and dosage forms that so far are hard to reach with conventional glycerides. They include additive manufacturing processes and approaches in particle engineering using hot melt methods or spray congealing.

Robert Radsziwill
Robert is the Business Development Manager for Functional Excipients in the Pharma Division of IOI Oleo GmbH. Prior to this role he held technical and commercial roles focusing raw materials used in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry for 13 years. In each position he leveraged his diploma degree in Business Chemistry earned at Westfälische Wilhelms-University to drive interdisciplinary projects and work as interface between commercial and technical decision makers. Understanding technical, commercial and regulatory drivers from ideation to successful project-completion is key for him. In his free time he enjoys guitar heavy music as well as cooking for and with family and friends.
