Oleochemical expertise in the Prignitz district

15. October 2020

Wittenberge? Never heard of it! That was what I thought on my first contact with IOI Oleo GmbH’s plant. I’m Ronald Apel, Plant Manager in Wittenberge, and I am glad to say that my view has changed!

Conveniently located between Berlin and Hamburg, this attractive tourist destination has an interesting industrial history, characterised by an oil mill, a sewing machine factory and a chemical plant, which was built in 1938 and in operation up to the German reunification. At that time, everyone was glad that 25 of the 2300 employees could carry on working in their occupations in our plant. A massive impact on the region, for us the start of a successful development: 21 years as Prignitzer Chemie, then 4 years as Cremer Oleochemicals and now for almost 5 years as IOI Oleo GmbH – today we employ over 100 people.

What do we do here? We produce fatty acids from vegetable oils. Their purification through thermal processes to meet our customers’ quality criteria is one of our core competencies. But the chemist in me is also very pleased about our production of special esters, with which we provide our customers throughout the world − primarily in the fields of cosmetics, technical applications and nutrition − with high-quality products. And we are one of the largest manufacturers of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) in Europe; here we increasingly serve our customers with individual solutions to meet their special requirements (In this article, our Nutrition business unit writes about the product MCT). Finally, our own pilot plant and our research and development activities aid us in scaling up new products to industrial production levels.

For us sustainability is not merely a word. We have already been operating a biogas plant for the past 20 years, with which we gain energy from the organic content of our waste water and, at the same time, relieve the municipal sewage treatment plant. It follows that we also offer our products from sustainable sources; our customers should always feel free to enquire about them. Moreover, we are not short of ideas all around this increasingly important topic. Learn more about what we do in promoting sustainability HERE.

We regularly offer interested customers an exclusive factory tour where you can gain insights into our processes and production. I would be delighted to see you here in Wittenberge (write us an email and register for a tour). To be the plant manager in this environment – a great job!
